Knee Schmee

Well before we talk about my knee let's talk about the fact that I did a headstand (assisted by the wall) in hatha yoga yesterday. I've been doing yoga for over 6 years and I've never even tried it. I don't really know why except I figured I couldn't. I don't know. I wonder why I've never even tried!! Now I realize that the marathon really has opened my eyes as to the concept of just do versus thinking i just can't. or even the concept of just try. I'm duly impressed. I mean forget everything else I DID A HEADSTAND!!!! Not a long one and certainly not the best one I'm meant to- but still!

On Tuesday I did strength training for 45 min. On Wednesday I did 10 min on the CardioWave, 10 min on the Stairmaster and 10 on the bike before rolling out my legs and stretching.

Yesterday Brandt massaged my legs and really just my legs although we did some neck for 75 minutes. My knee today feels healed. I've made the decision to attempt running 18 tomorrow but in the park just in case.

Restorative yoga tonight. Very excited for my nap- ha. Also heading to the nutritionist to see what is up with my metabolism!

a little inspiration

oh. and then there's this:

http://insidenikerunning.nike.com/2008/07/22/why-run-a-100-miles-just-ask-ramon/

i'm going to read this every day until the marathon.

because really, ramon is THAT inspiring

Wkd run

I ran 16.9 miles this weekend. I really wanted to hit 17 but I suppose I shouldn't obsess over 0.1 miles. It was 3:12 so that is the longest I've run so far, by 12 minutes.

On Thursday my knee felt fine and I ran 6.65 miles with Nicole. We did the whole bridle path, including the scary tunnel at the end- I was glad for a change of scenery though....

Saturday's run was unexpected. We were given the option of running, as Ramon put it, "zee perimeter of ze island" so that is what we did. After waiting in line behind some German tourists (damn closing of the restrooms at Bethesda we had to go to Boathouse) Nic and I headed up the hill on 72nd to the west side... we ran down the west side highway, around the tip past the Staten Island Ferry and up the East Side to 36th street (chk out the awesome weather) where we switched to 1st ave and then ran up to 71st street (I didnt want to run on 72nd and be tempted by the crosstown bus!!) and back into the park. Then I did a lower loop.

I definitely decided that those chalkblock things (i know this isnt the name but for the life of me I don't care) give me stomach cramps. Back to regular GU gels for me. I tried Vanilla bean this weekend- was like a cupcake icing on a shortbread cookie- super yum. I have MOcha by Clif to try next weekend and Orange Vanilla $2.50 GU. It should be like rocket fuel to charge that price!!!

Overall the run was good.. the east side was much colder and much more windy and my knee had bursts of flames which sucked. I drank a lot of water during the run and an entire gatorage by the time I got home, which I think fended off my headaches etc. Overall I felt a lot better than the weekend before- so improving!! Matt and I went to dinner at Bottino in CHelsea and i was passed out after a wonderful massage (love him!) by 11. I was up at 7 am on Sunday though so definitely need to work on sleeping a bit more on Sat nights. I did nap a bunch yesterday but I'm irritable, cranky and starved at all times. It's pretty damned sucky.

This week- a lot of strength training- My knee feels WORLDS better today so we'll see about tomorrows run. There is/will be about 10 inches of snow on the ground by tonight.... so I dont know about running outdoors in the park tomorrow!!

Feb was an 80 mile month!!! Averaging 11:26 a mile which is fine by me given how cold it was!

wk 2/23 24.38miles

knee twinge

My knees were quite tired after my GWB run.. I got a massage on Sunday and actually my knee started to hurt more! I think my muscles in my inner thighs were tight bc of my IT band and pulled on my knee. Monday I did my strength training... well I did squats, leg extensions and hamstring curls... then i did arms and abs at Equinox. KILLER. 30 min of rotating arms and then abs (a duh) exercises.

I took Tuesday night off because quite frankly I wasn't feeling it. just wasnt. Last night I tried to run but my knee twinged once at 0.8miles and instead I did arc and elliptical to total almost 40 min and simulate the run of about 3-4 miles.... I also did squats, lunges, leg extensions and hamstring curls... i really shouldve followed the cross training bs and done all the other things, but i suppose one step forward, right?

i just read through how much i've run each month and in how many runs and i feel good about it. we have 2 whole months left. and im going ot rock them.

I ran 52.6 miles in December in 12 runs.
I ran 86 miles in January in 12 runs.
I will run 80 miles in February in 11 runs.
WOW.

My long runs in reverse order of occurence sfor the last 2 months will be: 17, 15.25, 13.1,10.85, 13.1, 12,11,10

pretty damned good, right?

GWB run

Friday night I ran an easy 2 miles just to make up for not running on Thursday after my disaster of a novacaine experience.

Saturday was our GWB run. I was really excited to run somewhere different. I've realized that a lot of my running blocks/walls whatever are mental and I need to work on that. Saturday I took the cross town bus to 8th ave and then the E to 42nd and then the A to 165th and then ran/walked to 178th and St nicholas Ave. I'd never been up that far before on foot and never so far west. I found Nicole and we started our run. It was about 30 degrees and so freaking windy I thought I might get blown over the bridge.... honest!!! Once we got to the Palisades Park I was nervous but otherwise feeling strong.... Nicole ended up having to leave and I ran with Paige and Tanya. Loved the new company and loved that they conversed the whole time!! We ran about 15.25 miles (we know that because Paige had a GPS app on her Google phone) and I think we ran about 3 hours.... give or take, but again, I didn't care. I took 2 gels (caramel and double latte) and ate some pretzels in the middle that Ramon gave us. I drank a ton too which I think really helped. We walked up a bunch of the hills (they were STEEP!) but overall we did great.

There was a landslide apparently in the park so we had to climb for 5 min and then continue running- hysterical.

On the way back it did feel a lot longer, and we didd take a bunch of pics... but overall I feel like we finished strong. My knees were a little sore but I am goign to focus on strength training daily like I should have been. I was uber tired when I got home on Saturday... but i drank gatorade, waters, milk, beer etc... Was loopy that night and only slept about 7 hours which was definitely not enough

Very proud!!

WoW

I didnt realize so much time had passed since I last logged on Feb 10th. Perhaps only time has past because I havent run much.

I ran Wed the 11th and Thurs the 12th... 6.85m and 5m that week and I skipped my Sat run to lounge around and have a lazy weekend. In fact all of Presidents Day weekend I did nothing much with my favorite person.

I ran Tuesday on the treadmill for 4 miles. it was a tough 4 miles too.

And then yesterday I was supposed to run another 4-6 miles. It was super windy AND i had a tooth filling thing and got too much novocaine... soooo I didn't run. I had major insomnia. I havent slept. I'm super frustrated and upset.

my third half

I feel like all I have after every race is an excuse. I'm starting to realize however that running really is a precise sport. Sure anyone can do it in theory and you can wear just about anything and survive, to thrive there is a precision that is not for the weak of heart, or brain for that matter.

It's a tightrope I have yet to master.

Thsi past Sunday should have been fantastic. I slept a lot during the week (despite the start of an icky devastating cold sore, migraine and fever- not all at once but rather alternating throughout the week), hadn't run too too much, had done yoga, and had cooperative weather. And then folks, the stomach kicked in. Apparently I ate too much fat/etc the night before. My stomach felt like it was hosting a revolution around mile 4 and WWII by mile 9. I just didn't feel right if that makes any sense.

My time sucked. 2:27 I mean I did stop 2x because I thought i was going ot puke etc but REALLY!?!?
